The fifth BRICS Summit will be held in Durban, South Africa, from March 26-27, at the Durban International Convention Centre. The theme of this summit is 'BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialization.'

The Durban summit focussed mainly on Africa's infrastructure development, the set up of a BRICS development bank, a BRICS think-tank, and a BRICS business council. It was originally called 'BRIC,' until South Africa joined in 2011, at the third summit in China.

It has since then been called the 'BRICS.' BRICS member nations account for about 43% of the world population and approximately one-fifth of the global Gross Domestic Production (GDP).

• Stalled Human Development Progress: The global HDI saw its smallest increase since 1990 (excluding the 2020-2021 crisis years).
• If pre-Covid trends had continued, most countries could have reached very high human development by 2030, this is now likely to be delayed by decades.
• Top and Bottom Ranks: Iceland ranked first with an HDI of 0.972, while South Sudan ranked last with an HDI of 0.388.
• Growing Inequality: The disparity between the richest and poorest nations has been widening, with high-HDI countries continuing to make progress while low-HDI countries face stagnation.
• Al and Future of Work: The report notes that Artificial Intelligence (Al) is rapidly spreading, with 1 in 5 people globally already using Al tools.
• While 60% served people believe Al will create new job opportunities, half fear it could replace or transform their current roles.
• The 2025 Human Development Report emphasizes the need for inclusive, human-centered Al policies to ensure Al contributes positively to human development, rather than exacerbating inequalities or displacing jobs.

Swavalamban Yojana was a pension scheme aimed at the unorganised sector in India. It was implemented for all citizens in the unorganised sector who joined the National Pension Scheme (NPS) administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Act 2013. The pension scheme is accessible to all workers in the age group of 18-60 years.
About National Pension System (NPS)

• It is aretirement benefit scheme introduced by the Government of India to facilitate regular income post-retirement for all subscribers.
• NPS was launched on 1st January, 2004.
• Initially, NPS was introduced for the new government recruits (except the armed forces). With effect from 1st May, 2009, NPS has been provided for all citizens of the country, including the unorganised sector workers on voluntary basis.
• Voluntary: It is a voluntary scheme for all citizens of India. People can invest any amount in their NPS account at any time.
• Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN): It is based on a unique PRAN, which is allotted to every subscriber.
• Portability: NPS account or PRAN will remain the same irrespective of changes in employment, city, or state. It can be used from any location in India.
• PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority) is the governing body for NPS.
• There is no defined benefit that would be available at the time of exit from the system, and the accumulated wealth depends on the contributions made and the income generated from the investment of such wealth.
• Under NPS, individual savings are pooled into a pension fund, which is invested by PFRDA-regulated professional fund managers into diversified portfolios comprising Government Bonds, Bills, Corporate Debentures, and Shares.
• Contributions made by individual subscribers are accumulated until retirement, and corpus growth continues via market-linked returns. Subscribers also have the option to exit this plan before retirement or opt for superannuation.

Tajikistan joined the World Trade Organization in March 2013. It is the largest nation to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). WTO is the whole-sole global organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations.

The WTO's global system reduces trade restrictions through negotiation and operates under the principle of non-discrimination. The outcome is reduced costs of production (because imports used in production are cheaper), reduced prices of finished goods and services, more choice and finally a lower cost of living.

Furthermore, the WTO agreements are full of a provision that considers the interests of developing countries.

27th Indira Gandhi National Integration Award was conferred on Gulzar. Renowned poet and filmmaker Gulzar has been selected for the 27th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. He won the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his contribution to the arts and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002.
